Roots Deep In Christ—By Randy

Colossians 2:6-7 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. NLT

Last weekend we had beautiful weather! Blue sky and sunshine. The temp was a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It was beautiful weather to do some work in the yard. My wife and I got the whole yard, front and back, weeded! As I pulled up weeds from the gravel in the back yard, I noticed that the roots were many but very shallow and spread out. This made the weeds extremely easy to pull up. Now, I don’t want to compare us to weeds…but God does tell His children to be rooted deep into Christ when the Bible says, “Let your roots grow down into him” (Colossians 2:7a). Weeds, Plants, and Trees need roots to soak up the nutrients from the soil along with stabilize them when the wind from storms blow against them.

We as children of God need roots to soak up nutrients from the rich soil of Jesus Christ along with bringing stability when the storms of life hit. In nature, roots grow with time along with the proper amount of exposure to the sun and rain. So it is with our relationship with Christ. Our roots grow deep into Christ through time and obedience. Consistent obedience to Jesus over a long period of time grows roots deep into Him. Accepting Jesus into your life (believing in Him) while not continuing to work at listening to Him for the purpose of obeying and enjoying Him will cause a person to have roots that are shallow. Shallow roots don’t get enough nutrients to withstand dry seasons, nor the storms of life.

Rebecca and I’s desire for this blog is to help in your walk with the Lord, encourage growth in your marriage, along with give practical tips in raising your family God’s way. We hope this will be a frequent stop for you, not because we have all the answers, but because we believe that you will be encouraged in life and your relationships as we look to the Lord together. Join us as we continue to grow our roots deep into Christ!

Question: How are you currently spending intentional time with Jesus?
